Learning Beyond Boundaries
Welcome to our Junior School
Highgate Junior School is from Year 3 to Year 6 (aged 7 to 11).
OUR LEARNING APPROACH
In the Junior School, we inspire young learners to be curious, creative, and confident as they embark on their educational journey. Based on the English National Curriculum our innovative approach will challenge students with a dynamic blend of intellectual rigour and skills-based learning, empowering them to understand how they learn, take ownership of their progress, and confidently apply their knowledge in meaningful, real-world contexts.
Through this approach, we will nurture reflective and proactive individuals who value social responsibility, embrace cultural diversity, and develop the skills and character needed for success both in school and beyond.
Our Priorities
- To ensure that every student can actively engage with our rich curriculum, gaining not only knowledge and skills but also the confidence to excel in all areas of learning.
- To combine academic rigour with creative teaching approaches, offering a uniquely diverse and enriching educational experience that inspires curiosity and a love for learning.
- To nurture character traits essential for success: Curiosity, Respect, Empathy and Determination (CRED), while fostering resilience, independence, cooperation, focus, and sound judgement, equipping students with the tools they need to thrive both academically and personally.
Our Junior Curriculum
Our Junior curriculum will reflect the principles of the English National Curriculum, enriched by Highgate’s distinctive approach to nurturing curiosity, creativity and confidence in young learners. This balanced programme provides a strong foundation in essential subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science, while also encouraging exploration in creative and practical areas such as Art, Music, Drama and Design Technology.
Designed to inspire a lifelong love of learning, our curriculum will combine academic excellence with a global perspective, equipping students with the skills, knowledge and character needed to succeed both in school and in life. By fostering well-rounded individuals, we aim to prepare your child not only for the next stage of their education but for a bright and fulfilling future.
Our Junior Teachers
Our Junior School teaching staff will be carefully selected to provide a warm and supportive environment tailored to the unique needs of growing learners. Each teacher will bring exceptional qualifications, experience, and a genuine passion for working with children at this important stage of their development.
Recognising the natural curiosity and energy of junior students, our teachers will use engaging and creative approaches to inspire a love of learning. With a focus on nurturing confidence, independence and collaboration, they will guide students to explore new ideas, ask questions and develop essential skills.
Our teachers will foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere, ensuring that every child feels valued and encouraged to grow academically, socially and emotionally. Through their care and expertise, they will help students build a strong foundation for a lifetime of learning and success.
Beyond the Classroom
Support activities beyond the classroom are really important for Junior School children, especially for those learning English as an Additional Language (EAL). These activities include fun things like sports teams, art clubs, and music groups, which help children to express themselves, make friends, and practice their language skills in a friendly environment. Pastoral care programs ensure that every child feels safe and supported, helping them thrive emotionally and socially. Involving parents in these activities is also key, as it brings families together and strengthens the school community. All of these elements work together to create a fun and nurturing atmosphere where children can grow, learn, and feel confident both in and out of the classroom.
